about

London, 31st May 2020. Sunday 7pm. We had now gone through more than two full months of ‘lockdown’. Since 26th March, there had also been the regular Thursday 8pm ‘Clap for Our Carers’, aka ‘Clap for the NHS’ or ‘Clap for Key Workers’. On 2nd April, this appreciation was extended to all key workers, including healthcare workers, emergency services, armed services, delivery drivers, shop workers, teachers, waste collectors, manufacturers, postal workers, cleaners, vets and engineers. Respect and admiration were shown for the people that risked their own health to look after others or to make sure the wheels of the society continued to turn. Supermarkets’ shelves resembled some post-apocalyptic nightmare, in which toilet paper, eggs, flour, rice, pasta and bottled water were non-existent or were being fought over by unnerved shoppers. Small retailers and corner shops were our saviours, as they braved the virus by remaining open and providing neighbourhoods with the essentials that for the past nine weeks hoarders and panic-buyers had made hard to come by elsewhere.

This was the setting as I performed my 6th weekly Swill’s Sunday Session live on Facebook. I‘d only expected to do a handful of these before we could go out and start gigging again. That wasn’t to be…

So, here is a selection of songs I performed live via Facebook from my kitchen from the end of May to the end of June while unable to go out and gig due to the restrictions imposed as a result of the UK COVID-19 lockdown. My aim was to play songs rarely performed by The Men They Couldn’t Hang or at my own solo gigs and sprinkle in a couple of covers and other rarities.

My daughter Katherine learned to play Bottom of the World on piano and made a very rare appearance outside of our annual Christmas singsongs. And, on the last Sunday in June, Tom Spencer nipped in for a two-meter-socially-distanced set and a bit of a general catch-up.
The performances may be a little rough around the edges, and arrangements a bit different to what you might have heard before, but I think the general vibe comes across.

It’s presented here in magnificent lo-fi for your listening pleasure.

A souvenir of strange times.

Cheers,
Swill
